A boozy fixture just off Oxford Street since 1738, The Running Horse lays claim to being Mayfair’s oldest hostelry – a woody, masculine bolthole that has played host to generations of thirsty drinkers, suits and shoppers. Following the arrival of new owners (including James Chase from the family-owned Chase Distillery), it has been restored to something like its original state as a proper pub serving craft beers from independent breweries backed by some proper grub – think a chopped burger with ‘jockey whips’ (chips) or slow-cooked Jacob’s ladder (beef ribs). Meanwhile, Chase’s award-winning spirits feature heavily on the optics. The venue also houses The Whip – an upstairs cocktail bar done out in jockeys’ silks with a drinks list dominated by fruity seasonal juleps (a tipple forever associated with The Kentucky Derby), served the old way in pewter tins.
