The setting may suggest a certain ration-book austerity, but it’s the keenly priced food that really induces nostalgia at Canteen. If your mother doesn’t like the Wagamama-style minimalism, she may at least warm to the wholesomeness of the homely British grub. The menu ‘does what it says on the tin’, with a contingent of hearty pies, roasts & stews supplemented by lighter bar snacks such as fish-finger sandwiches or Scotch eggs with piccalilli. The repertoire is fleshed out with the likes of devilled kidneys on toast, or meatless Glamorgan sausages with tomato relish. Canteen also marks the rituals of elevenses & afternoon tea, with fresh-baked cakes, biscuits & scones. Caffeine comes courtesy of the Monmouth Coffee Company, but if something stronger is called for, the bar can oblige with a selection of British bottled beers, lagers, ciders & perry, plus draught ale from Greenwich’s Meantime Brewery.
