Square Meal Review of Amber ?

Multi-purpose Amber aims to please a diverse bunch, whether it’s CityPoint suits out for a bite, the after-work crowd in need of a quick fix, or serious disco divas looking for some 70s’ nostalgia. During daylight hours, the wood-toned Amber bar itself is the place for ‘gourmet’ burgers (served in focaccia buns) or more homely fare (lasagne, fishcakes.) Elsewhere, the volume is cranked up a notch, whether you choose the chart-friendly Opal Bar or the appropriately named Milk Bar, where the Top 40 is ditched in favour of funky house music & serviceable cocktails. Meanwhile, the Liberace-esque Groovy Wonderland is a suitably retro den complete with a Saturday Night Fever-style dance floor & mirrorballs. Affordable wines, beers & cocktails are on hand for lubrication.

You want to plan your Christmas party, then don't think you can do it here! Every time you think you have it planned you get moved and your options get taken away from you.

We enquired as to using the Groovy Bar and were told that it was not possible to book the area, so we booked the Milk Bar with food at 7. We wanted to pre-order drinks, even enquiring what the price of a bottle of Vodka would be. When we had paid the non-refundable deposit we were told that we were no longer in the Milk Bar as someone had booked out the whole area (someone with more money no doubt!) and we had been moved to the Opal Bar, we were not happy but we accepted this. We were then told that as we were no longer in the Milk Bar we could no longer pre-order bottles of vodka! We could pre-order drinks vouchers, however you could only order 2 drinks each due to their stance on excess drinking. You have to assume that they want people to buy more than two drinks and they are not going to chuck you out after having 2 pints!

The reservation came through and lo and behold we were no longer in the Opal Bar we had been moved to the Project B Bar, we had also now been told that if we do not arrive at the bar by 5:20pm our table would be released. Where exactly do they expect to serve our food at 7pm if they gave away our table?

All in all the staff have been useless, once they have your money you have to work to their rules, at no time do they warn you of the changes you just have to notice them for yourselves.

When we arrived at the venue we were told that even though it was happy hour we could only have 1 drink with our drinks voucher, we spoke to the duty manager who advised that this was incorrect and she would talk to the bar staff. 20 minutes later we went to the bar again and once again suffered the same set back.

The food when it arrived was nothing like the food we had at the taster night. For one thing the food on the taster night was hot, the food was like an Iceland party platter and all for over £20 a head. There were over 20 of us and we were all expected to crowd around an area 3 foot wide to get food, no plates were offered.

I have delayed in posting this review as we have been awaiting their response to our complaints, however once again their customer service is appaling and no repsonse has been forthcoming!
