Joanna’s has been serving the good folk of Crystal Palace for more than 30 years, & it’s still going strong. From the outside, the place looks like the archetypal modern brasserie, but inside, the starched white tablecloths, wood-panelled maître d’s booth, & rich oil paintings hint at an opulent bygone era. The same mix of old & new is evident in the menu, so classics such as chicken-liver parfait, fish pie & confit duck are joined by updated dishes of, say, chicken satay or Singapore chilli crab. Visit on Sunday for beautiful roast sirloin of beef; for more casual dining, there are breakfast, brunch & set-lunch menus. ‘Table 99’, an intimate booth at the back of the restaurant, is the place to head for the ultimate dîner à deux.
