As his recent exploits on Hell’s Kitchen proved, Marco Pierre White is not shy of courting controversy & his St James’s Italian follows suit, provoking strong emotions on both sides. Many are dazzled by the beautiful interiors, with mosaic floors, twinkly lighting & leather banquettes in the street-facing casual bar/diner, & crisp linen, well-spaced tables & an outstanding art collection featuring in the more formal dining room behind. We also receive many reports of charming, conscientious service & well-rendered Italian classics, including wild mushroom risotto, sea bass cooked with clams & Barolo, & tiramisu. However, tales of off-days & culinary disappointments also reach us & we hear still more grumbles that waiting staff can sometimes let the smiles slip, lapsing into rudeness & arrogance. Perhaps they’re taking a leaf from their master’s book: a chef/restaurateur famed both for his breathtaking skill & his volatile temperament.

I had a real surpise with the food here, it was my first time and was expecting small over fancy portions, but it wasn't like that at all, the food was simply brilliant just as you would expect good Italian food. It was all about the produce, the starter of prosciuto toscano simply a plate of melon and superb ham slightly thicker slices than I have had previously but extemely tasty. Onto the main and the wild sea bass with tomatoes and olives was agian simple but the flavours were great and the fish cooked to perfection. I couldn't manage desert but i will be back to the restaurant very soon. The service was quite slow but to be honest i would to prefer to saviour each course and be left with time to chat and drink mi wine.
