Highgate is an affluent area oddly lacking in restaurants, so it’s little surprise that the handsome Bull stands head & shoulders above its neighbours. While there is a ‘pub’ side to it (real ales & a cracking Sunday roast) it also screams serious restaurant: there’s a knowledgeable & well-organised wine list, a liqueur trolley for after the meal, & how many pubs do you know with a pastry chef? The open-plan dining room is grandly lit by chandeliers (& warmed by fires in winter), while the kitchen takes inspiration from around the globe with the well-honed likes of vegetable tempura with chilli daikon, Catalan fish stew with saffron aioli or Elwy Valley rack of lamb. Puddings of passionfruit meringue pie with mango sorbet are guaranteed to end meals on a high note. Prices are high but so is quality, & the outside terrace holds sought-after tables in summer.
