Famous as the restaurant where football’s ‘special one’ José Mourinho was allegedly bugged, Portal champions Portuguese cuisine in ‘one of the most beautiful spaces in London’. It’s certainly atmospheric & cleverly designed, although the decibels can be deafening – especially if big parties are in. The smart bar dispenses moreish ‘petiscos’ nibbles (veal & chicken croquetas, beef Madeira skewers with green pesto), but it pays to bag a table in the spectacular conservatory out back. Grilled sardines, baby goat cutlets, native bisaro pigs & emblematic bacalhau (salt cod) all make their appearance, but the kitchen has an enlightened take on things – think green asparagus soup with sautéed caracois (snails) or crusted rack of lamb with truffled rösti & grilled garlic. High prices & small portions are recurring bugbears, but take comfort in the fascinating Portuguese wine list.
