After you’ve passed through the ultra-modern lobby of the Cumberland Hotel, this brasserie can seem like a let-down. Sure, the room has some designer features (a wood-slatted ceiling, oversized candelabras & a chilled Ibiza soundtrack), but it lacks soul. It’s probably best suited to corporate groups or those who are pressed for time (order any number of ‘clocked’ dishes & be out in an hour). Though Gary Rhodes himself may not be in the kitchen, the menus are peppered with his trademark versions of reinvented British dishes: come here for scrambled duck eggs on toasted brioche with truffle, followed by plaice with homemade chips, shallot & caper mayonnaise or a mixed lamb grill with anchovy & mint butter & caramelised rosemary onions. The international wine list has plenty by the glass – so decant to the lounge bar, where the combination of plush seating & street views wins the day.
