If you're sold on the idea of ‘fusing London's pleasure-seeking social appetite with New York's inimitable style', then Automat will push your buttons – but be prepared for rapacious prices, massive portions and a raucous mix of Mayfair stereotypes, bawling kids and the odd celeb face (who's that girl?). Split into various spaces, with a deliberately faux US-style brasserie at the back (white-tiled walls, battered wood, desk lamps, leather booths), it doles out a version of multicultural American cuisine spanning everything from chicken noodle soup and crab cakes with guacamole to New York cheesecake. In between, various burgers are the top shouts – although grilled chicken breast with wild rocket salad and huge helpings of mac and cheese also come in for praise. Recommended for teeming weekend brunch and workday ‘Mayfair breakfasts' too.
