Eschewing all those plate-smashing, bouzouki clichés, this smart two-storey taverna is just the ticket for those who fancy a gastro rerun of their last visit to the Aegean. To start, you can opt for a bowl of avgolemono (the chicken, lemon & egg soup beloved of countless Greek grandchildren), although the best bet is to order a cluster of mezze to share – anything from subtle homemade taramasalata & other dips to tyropitakia (feta & olive parcels wrapped in filo pastry). After that, look to the grill for sausages, kebabs & meatballs with a fresh Greek salad on the side. Gyros (Greece’s answer to the doner kebab) & slow-cooked lamb kleftiko are also on offer, along with a few traditional pastries oozing honey. The wine list seldom ventures beyond the home country.
