As Greek As It Gets

‘Greeks do eat better,’ proclaims the blurb. So does this restaurant live up to its name? If you were expecting a down-home mezze dive you’ll be disappointed. Traditional trappings are confined to a few black & white photos of weathered Greek faces & a national costume hanging on the wall. The menu doesn’t deviate much from the norm, but quality is high & helpings are generous. Work your way through the inevitable dips, skewers of souvlakia wrapped in flatbread, & more substantial platefuls ranging from spanakorizo (Greek-style spinach ‘risotto’) to grilled chicken fillet with beetroot purée. Three mezze for around a tenner at lunchtime sounds like a good deal, especially with some gutsy Greek wine or a shot of ouzo. The atmosphere is lively, without being raucous, & the staff want diners to enjoy themselves – although they draw the line at plate smashing.
