Que Viet is one of Kingsland Road’s more intimate, bistro-like spaces, & bucks the trend for designer refurbs – replacing cool canteen styling with a soundtrack of schmaltzy Vietnamese crooners, a red rose on every table, shimmering black net curtains & even a chandelier or two. The menu is shorter than most in the neighbourhood & it’s easier to navigate, though the ‘thumbs-up’ symbols alongside house specials are worth noting. Our crispy salt & pepper sea bass & deep-fried tofu stuffed with minced prawns proved the point & stole the show over generic spring rolls & noodle dishes; the signature ‘shaking beef’ & an esoteric starter involving goat meat are also come recommended. The missing link at Que Viet is service: its neighbours know the value of a warm welcome & heartfelt recommendations.
