Kaya House

Even though the much-loved former owners of Kaya House have returned to Malaysia, plenty of regulars say this dinky café is just as good – not least because the kitchen team has stayed put. The bright-green walls & unforgiving lighting won’t improve your date’s looks, but the functional space plays second fiddle to the curries, sambals & clay-pot dishes that regulars adore. Spicy soft-shell crab, chicken & beef rendang, & drunken prawns are just some of the highlights on a long menu that takes in less fiery Cantonese dishes alongside chilli-laden Malay classics. Lovers of spicy food should try one of the dozen sambal dishes, topped with dried prawns & chilli paste. Tsingtao & Tiger beer are the perfect foil to the fiery heat, though wines are also available.
