Square Meal Review of Wagamama Canary Wharf ?

Credited with bringing the Japanese noodle bar into the mainstream, Wagamama still does exactly what it says on the tin. The menu is dominated by noodles – mostly wok-fried or in broth – & portions are generous throughout. It’s not expensive, either: classic yaki soba, a heaped, glistening plate of wheat noodles tossed with shrimp, chicken, sprouts, scallions, & pink slivers of Japanese pickle, weighs in at a mere £7.60. Mains represent the best value for the hard-up, but for flavour & innovation make room for sides & puddings. A newish dish of glazed chicken wings is a savoury, sticky, smoky treat, while the creamy cheesecake topped with tart Japanese cherries – also new to the menu – is a terrific way to end a meal. Seating is at long, communal tables & service is efficient – too efficient for some, who find the practice of delivering dishes in no particular order an irritation.

I went for a catch up with some old school freinds last week and we went to Wagamama's as it seemed a safe option where you know what to expect and can take your time and chat away as because of the seemingly relaxed atmosphere.
I had been recommended it a couple of years ago but had never visited so this was my Wagamama debut. The seating arrangement and decor was very informal and relaxed as I has expected…it was a shame the waiting staff could not work to the same philosophy! We were rushed to order and when a couple in our party were not ready it was greeted with a huge huff and a sigh…the poor girl!
When the food arrived it was so bland. My dish of “Chilli chicken Men” had my mouth watering with it's desciption and being a keen lover of authentic Noodle dishes it had a lot to live up to.

The obviously microwaved noodles were rubbery and tasteless and the un-inspring one dimensional chilli sauce did little to awake my tastebuds, in fact they were more likely to slip into a coma! The fact that the description of the dish was served with such a range of flavours including lemon grass, red onion garlic ginger and pepper seemed like it could me revised, this dish had only one flavour-chilli- and was a major dissapointment!!

I go to a small authentic Noddle hut near my house in Hampton which is quick, cheap and so extrmely tasty and the service is always with a smile…I imagine this was the idea behind Wagamama when it first started but as usual as the chain grows the spirit flavour and general attention to detail is lost in the pursuit of more cash.

    Postive thinking…no…poitively boring…yes!
