Post-makeover, Christopher's raised ground-floor bar is a noticeable improvement on its grown-tired predecessor. With groovy 1950s styling, flattering lighting and a bold, bronze bar as its focal point, here’s a Madison Avenue martini lounge for Mad Men on a hot date – although some snappy Blue Note jazz or 60s soul would fit better than the annoying ‘urban noise’ soundtrack. Still, quality cocktails make up for this bum note. Commendably priced at £9 a pop, martinez heads a list of classic and contemporary martinis that includes Vesper, journalist, and Bronx; otherwise, look for the ‘decadent’ chilli and ginger variant and kooky Nutella version. Wines by the glass go well with New York-meets-New Mexico bar food: popcorn shrimps, burgers, Reuben sandwiches, quesadillas, nachos, salt beef salad, cheesecake or a chocolate, peanut butter and jelly sandwich with ice cream.
