Light & bright at the front but progressively darker & more sophisticated as you move away from the door, Abacus is among the slickest of City bars. The inner sanctum is decked out in dark, sexy reds with splashes of gold & black chandeliers while the menu is, to say the least, comprehensive. Lunch offerings range from summery salads to steak, mushroom & stout pie & prices are very reasonable; the evening menu has a greater emphasis on nibbles to soak up alcohol but there are still full main courses to order. Aside from a few chic reds & whites – a Babich New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc or a Crozes-Hermitage Etienne Pochon, for instance – bottles on the wine list are sub-£20; cocktails have a classic twist & there’s Sol or Corona in bottles & Beck’s Vier or Stella on tap. Only the dodgy service takes the gloss off things.
