Stroll along Broadway Market on a Saturday & you’ll more often than not gravitate towards The Cat & Mutton, the friendly boozer at the London Fields end. Its appeal is probably 10 parts location to one part food & drink. Blackboards list snacks & the day’s menu, which will doubtless include safe bets such as a burger or cod & chips, alongside mainstream gastropub grub: broccoli with poached egg & hollandaise, for instance, or beef brisket with red cabbage & potato cake. This isn’t the place to come for liquid thrills either; Red Stripe, Guinness & cider du jour, Kopparberg, are more the thing. But let’s not be ungenerous: this is a fine spot for a pint, so the hip clientele isn’t wrong. Outside, the picnic benches are kicking on a hot day.
