Square Meal Selections

Square Meal Review of LMNT ?

On grimy Queensbridge Road, LMNT is a soi-disant ‘shrine to extravagance’. Like a pantomime version of the British Museum with a crazy Greco-Roman-Egyptian design scheme (complete with a giant urn you can dine in, & a sphinx fireplace), it is wild, wacky, weird &… rather wonderful. The magic works better by night, when the lighting’s down & you’re a glass of house wine to the good, although lunch has its virtues, too – namely, a pound off starters & two off mains. Starters (£3.75 at lunch, £4.75 at dinner) could be fishcake with watercress & aïoli, or cured salmon tartare with cracked wheat salad. Mains (all £8.95/£10.95) might be roast cod with curried Puy lentils, or butternut squash, sage & Stilton risotto, while sticky toffee pudding heads the dessert list. Not exactly sophisticated, but heaven for students, interns & cheap dates.

This restaurant really is a lot of fun, and great for special occasions. Even if you're only celebrating the fact that it's a Thursday night, this restaurant is still a great place to go because you get really nice food here, and it's fairly inexpensive. The menu is interesting without being intimidating, and the portion sizes fill you up (two courses would suffice, although I can never turn down the desserts, which are all delicious). I've come back here again and again, and always request to sit somewhere else to experience the restaurant from all of its angles – my favourite place is the big urn (perfect for up to four people), although there are what I call tree-top tables (tables high up with their own individual staircases) and ship cabin tables (which do require some care when standing up…). There is also a larger table right over the bar. The one other thing to look out for is the décor in the toilets. Not necessarily for the faint-hearted, but fairly amusing.
