China Delight

Up front in Minster Court it’s a plush old-school Chinese with heavy furniture & a dated celebrity photo of John & Norma Major, while facing Mark Lane it’s a stark modern Asian canteen with fewer comforts or pretensions to glamour; either way, China Delight is a sprawling giant of a restaurant. The menu, though, is relatively compact, full of favourites such as wonton soup, crispy duck with hoisin sauce & pancakes or Singapore noodles with shrimps & pork. But there are a couple of surprises, including cold seasoned jellyfish & cucumber strips, scallops stir-fried with asparagus or gong bao chicken with peanuts, chilli & a trace of Szechuan pepper. Prices are modest, but service can be clumsy.
