Square Meal review of The Northgate:
Among the earliest examples of the gastropub genus, The Northgate ticks all the right boxes with its comfy sofas, mixture of sturdy tables & old school chairs, heritage paint colours & spacious dining area. The menu collects a judicious mix of European views with a southern aspect. Chalked on the board might be moules mariniere, cod fillet in pancetta with shrimp & samphire risotto or artichoke, butternut squash & courgette open lasagne. The food won’t knock your socks off, but it’s reasonably well cooked, while the genial service & varied wines get a further thumbs-up.
