With its folksy art & 50-strong collection of vodkas, diminutive Holborn hideaway Bar Polski should be the Holy Grail for Warsaw-in-exile – although you are just as likely to hear ‘estuary English’ accents here at the close of play. Flavoured spirits are legion: sample caraway seed, black cherry, mint, rowanberry, almond or heady herby infusions at around £3 a shot. It’s also worth investigating the Latvian brandy, Polish apple ‘shandy’ & a quintet of indigenous ales including Zubr, Zywiec & Tatra. Eating Polish style has a certain ‘navvy appeal’: try bigos stew, kielbasa sausage & mash, pierogi dumplings, potato fritters, soused herrings & baked lemon cheesecake, washed down with yet more liquor. Top calls on the drinks front? Kosher orange-infused Rebeka & Czysta Deluxe – enigmatically made using ‘six steps’.
