Out of India, but firmly established in London (there are also branches in Hampstead & Piccadilly), this branch of the Woodlands chain is a trusted purveyor of regional vegetarian food. Simple decor fits with an uncomplicated ethos, which favours health without getting too virtuous: many of the wines are organic, & vegan/Jain eaters are helpfully guided through the menus. Start with light, steamed idli with sambar & coconut chutney or a poori crackling with irresistible puffed rice before sampling special dosas & uttappams with gloriously spiced fillings. All manner of veggie curries find their way into the thalis, & puffy bhatura bread makes an impressive accompaniment. The introduction of a tandoor oven & more northerly dishes (including paneer & mushroom tikka or vegetable seekh kebab) has been warmly received.
