Square Meal review of The Chancery:
Write your review
This little corner of London’s legal heartland makes a convincing case for quiet sophistication. While the monochrome setting is smartly but sparsely decorated, there’s plenty of colour splashed onto both the plate & palate in the sharp European cooking that bursts with vibrant flavours: think rabbit beignet with quinoa, cardamom & orange dressing, or Manuka-smoked lamb stuffed with pork sausage. Fashionable ingredients are employed skilfully, with the deceptively simple dishes benefitting from lots of culinary know-how. Meanwhile, desserts such as peach & pomegranate cheesecake combine lightness & indulgence, while wines achieve a clever balance of Old & New worlds. Service is spot-on & the fixed-price lunch & dinner menu (£34 for three courses plus tea, coffee & petits fours) is great value.
Chef Andy Thompson
With a transatlantic-based CV that includes L’Escargot and Harvey’s in London and the Lennox Room and Aureole in New York, Andy Thompson opened City favourite The Clerkenwell Dining Room in St John
Street EC1 with business partner Zak Jones a few years back. Now the boys have added another string to their bow with the opening of The Chancery, where Thompson’s modern European food is already
wowing legal eagles – so much so that it scooped the BMW Square Meal Award for Best New Restaurant Autumn 2004. Once again, Thompson delivers gutsy-yet-refined cooking in this small but perfectly
formed restaurant.
