With its imposing Louis XIV-style fireplace, oversized mirrors & scattering of generously proportioned tables, The Cadogan’s dining room has an air of restrained elegance. The kitchen excels in the simple preparation of top-notch British ingredients, such as a delightful starter of asparagus & air-dried Cumbrian ham topped with a fried duck’s egg. The likes of dressed Cornish crab salad with lurid green cucumber jelly & a modern interpretation of toad in the hole (separate piles of almond-crusted pork loin, over-cooked batter, wilted leeks & thick brown gravy) would have benefited from a similarly unfussy approach. Staff are friendly & weekend lunches offer one of the best deals in town: three courses with an aperitif & unlimited Champagne for £29.50.
