A refuge from the King’s Cross crowds, this cavernous space (once a locomotive workshop) was transformed by a team of local architects, who continue to run the operation as a friendly & funky eatery. 06 does good breakfasts (granola with Greek yoghurt, free-range eggs on toast), as well as a seasonal lunch menu packed with the flavours of the continent: a risotto of spring vegetables & preserved lemons served with Pernod-laced clams or grilled mackerel with roasted new potatoes & salsa verde. In the evening, sustenance comes in the form of small plates – think breaded pork terrine with piccalilli, or chorizo & Cheddar tortilla. As night falls, drinkers also descend on the place, supping chilled beers & wines from a well-annotated list full of fashionable names such as Austria’s Grüner Veltliner.
