Square Meal Review of Diciannove at the Crowne Plaza Hotel ?

What was Refettorio has reinvented itself as Diciannove (literally ‘19’), following a refurb and the addition of a new deli. Although superstar Giorgio Locatelli is no longer involved, head chef Alessandro Bay is still at the helm and the food is likely to follow a similar ingredients-led path as before. The main feature at lunchtime will be assorted ‘convivia’ – sharing plates of artisan charcuterie, cheeses and rustic breads with homemade sottaceti (pickles) and deep-fried vegetables. Otherwise, business suits, hotel guests and tourists can choose from a conventional menu featuring, say, lamb ravioli with green pea purée or grilled baby chicken with sautéed spinach and roast potatoes, followed by tiramisu or a fruit tart. In the evening, there’s a modest three-course menu (£25) to match the all-Italian wine list.

  1. Diciannove at the Crowne Plaza Hotel is an Italian restaurant, and a reincarnation of Refrettorio, a Giorgio Locatelli outlet that was well known for its accomplished cooking. Giorgio’s influence is still visible in Diciannove as Head Chef Alessandro Bay spent over 10 years under Michelin-starred Giorgio Locatelli, working his way up from chef de partie to sous chef and finally as head chef. As such, pasta is king at Diciannove, all of which are homemade daily. Diciannove translates to 19 in Italian and represents the address of the hotel, number 19 New Bridge St. ...

  3. It’s funny how certain spaces give off certain vibes. As we entered the lobby via some revolving doors I was none the wiser. Even when I noticed one restaurant to our left and one to our right, I didn’t twig! It wasn’t until I visited the toilet half way through our meal that it finally clicked… This is a hotel and that was the vibe I must have sensed (the force is strong with this one – not!) Saff knew all along and blamed her tiredness on not sharing this fact with me. Now we are usually a little sceptical of hotel eateries, although we have been very pleasantly surprised of late. But it just bears testament to the quality of Diciannove‘s food and the standard of service that I didn’t realise that we were in the Crowne Plaza Hotel until I literally walked into the reception desk...

  4. What a lovely evening Sally and I had on Thursday at Diciannove - an Italian restaurant within the Crowne Plaza hotel in Blackfriars that has renamed and recently revamped itself. Usually PR events are much the same. Drinks and food that the proprietors THINK you want to sample thrown at you. Followed by an A4 sheet of paper with the offering and many links to ensure that you post SOMETHING to ensure the restaurant gains coverage. I have to love Roche because they get it right. They don’t make me FEEL like I have to post anything on the Internet or give any coverage to events. I guess their clients just have such an air about them that I feel that I will want to tell people “look here! You must go!” That’s certainly how I felt sampling the food at Diciannove. Listening to the General Manager tell us about his passion for Diciannove and introducing us to his chefs. It’s also how I felt when Jared – restaurant manager (and formally a member of staff at The Waldorf (I know – like WHOA), Nicholas – Hotel Manager and Joel – Bar Manager invited Sally and I to have a look at the layout of Voltaire – the champagne bar and cigar terrace located in the basement of the grade II listed building complete with amazing vaults. It used to be a palace and a prison! We were blown away. I think we might have found our favourite night spot...
