Having discovered that there’s only so much you can do with the Great British banger, S&M (that’s sausage & mash, in case you were wondering) has broadened its remit to welcome foreign imports, from a herby Toulouse saucisse to a spicy Thai variety. It’s great if you’re in the mood for a no-frills plate of stodge, coupled with nostalgia-driven interiors that are part Jubilee street party, part seaside café – but it’s never going to blow your culinary socks off. The best bet is to visit for breakfast, when the humble banger is joined by its friends bacon, eggs, beans, black pud & even bubble & squeak. Alternatively, you can break ranks & order kippers with a boiled egg or trendy plates of muesli & eggs Benedict. Staff are a lot more friendly & easier on the eye than their counterparts in the average greasy spoon, too.
