A firm favourite with the Exmouth Market crew, who come here to make lots of noise, The Easton is a gastropub in the original sense of the word – a proper, unreformed boozer that also has serious culinary intentions. The owners are keen on home-grown pickings and locally sourced seasonal produce, all of which finds its way onto the concise seasonal menu. Start with a colourful salad of crispy roast duck, watermelon, coriander and mint, ahead of salmon fishcakes, beef stroganoff or lamb loin chops with roasted winter vegetables and rosemary jus. To close, try the warm ‘sunken’ chocolate cake or apple and mixed-berry crumble with Calvados custard. Drinkers have a choice of a couple of real ales and ‘boys’ beers such as Beck’s Vier, Kronenbourg and Staropramen, as well some quaffable cheap numbers from the workaday wine list.
