Square Meal review of Mint Leaf: ? Write your review

Rather like descending into a vast opium den, with lattices breaking up the space into more intimate areas, this dimly lit, minimalist Indian restaurant & bar (lovely cocktails & slightly cheaper food – see separate review) could be straight from the pages of Elle Decoration. With surrounds this sexy & prices so high, the food deserves to be good – & while there’s the odd grumble over ‘bland, dry’ dishes at ‘whopping’ prices, the cooking generally impresses. Fiery starters include plump, chilli-spiced king scallops cooked in the tandoor & black tiger prawns with green mango. Subtler main courses of lamb with spinach & yoghurt, & a knock-out red snapper in Goan spices, also hit the spot. Even desserts of creamy lemongrass & ginger creme brulee & a silky coconut cheesecake demonstrate the kitchen’s ability to get delicate spicing just right. Thoughts on service vary from ‘very attentive’ to ‘unsmiling & with limited English’.

Always a pleasure to drop into Mint Leaf for a curry with a difference. With its sleek look, dark teaks and a throughly modern yet members club atmosphere attached, it makes for a nice dinner out for just about any occasion. Food is well thought and above your ordinary indian. Don't expect a long menu full of oily regulars but instead carefully constructed contemporary twists. As an on/off visitor I've seen it change chefs and menu's, which hasn't affected the choice thankfully but if memory serves right portion sizes are not as generous as once were. One thing that has slipped a little since opening is service, which needs a little attention but is by no means of a diabolical standard or anywhere close. Overall a nice restaurant to walk into spontaneously if you are in the area or for a casual yet impression making dinner.
