Much-loved haunt of the glitterati & a host of other restaurant pilgrims, The Wolseley also succeeds in impressing (most of) Mayfair’s business moguls, to judge by the bulging postbag of positive feedback we’ve received. True, the odd grouch fails to be wooed by its charms – citing cramped tables, ‘average’ food & brusque service – but the vast majority celebrate its buzzy atmosphere, glamorous & impressive looks, unpretentious menu & well-paced if somewhat over-rehearsed service. There’s no culinary wizardry here, rather the aim is to offer well-executed, comforting classics such as Wiener schnitzel, eggs Benedict, roast beef & Yorkshire pud, coq au vin et al. Whether for a power breakfast, morning coffee, lunch, afternoon tea or dinner, the room is always packed, which means booking can prove a frustration. But most think it’s worth persisting to experience a restaurant that rarely puts a foot wrong.
