Proactive management has been instrumental in the transformation of the Fentiman from down-at-heel boozer into a thoroughly likeable pub-with-grub. Improved food has coincided with the appearance of the twenty- & thirtysomethings who have joined the old-timers amid the bookshelves & assiduously mismatched furniture in the comfy interior. The short, lunchtime menu features robust offerings – a succulent burger with hand-cut chips or a generous ploughman’s platter – alongside lighter, less successful options. In the evening, a more ambitious menu features dishes & prices at the sharper end of the gastropub spectrum, starting with lemon-marinated herring & peaking with a smoky, char-grilled, 21-day-hung rib-eye steak with roasted pine nuts & parsley butter. Summer weekend barbecues take advantage of the large, sun-filled garden & cheery staff add to the upbeat mood, particularly on pub-quiz Tuesday nights.
