Nyonya

First impressions might suggest that Nyonya, just off Notting Hill Gate, is just another high-street noodle bar, cynically positioned to attract budget-minded diners en route to Portobello Market. But while the stools & communal tables certainly have a touch of the canteen about them, the menu offers something a bit different: the cooking of Malaysia’s Chinese-Malay community, including a fair few street dishes, which perfectly suit the quick-eat feel of the place. Mix & match familiar favourites with more unusual dishes: stir-fried okra in chilli shrimp paste with a side order of chicken satay, or the classic noodle stir-fry of char kway teow with some lobak: five-spice pork wrapped in crispy bean curd & served with a sweet chilli sauce. The spicing is strong, the flavours clean & the prices are refreshingly low.
