A fortress of epicureanism on Farringdon Street, wine permeates every aspect of Vivat Bacchus from its wine-lovers’ bar to its restaurant. Bottles decorate the shelves in the bare-brick dining room, & each dish on the menu comes with a suitable wine-matching suggestion. True to the owners’ heritage, South African flavours find their way onto the mainly European menu – a dish of seared springbok with biltong & foie-gras croquette might shine brightly alongside sea bream with pine nuts, saffron rice & razor clams. The odd pricey special can ‘fall flat’, but there are also signs that the new chef is starting to think outside the box – cactus sorbet & foie-gras crème brûlée deliver unlikely cameos on the tasting menu. That said, most people are still here for the wine.
