Like its stablemates in the Lewis & Clarke group, The Last is definitely more ‘gastro bar’ than gastropub. Beyond the polished wood, steel fittings & colourful pinstriped sofas, there is some better-than-average lunchtime food to be had. The kitchen takes pride in its work, fleshing out its regular menu with daily fish specials such as smoked haddock with mustard sauce & a delicately poached egg; alternatively, pick from the carte, which offers interesting possibilities including wild boar & Chimay beer sausages. Country bumpkins lured to the bright lights make a beeline for pints of Adnams bitter & Hogan’s cider, while wine buffs have around 20 selections by the glass to consider; note that all drinks are half price for the duration of three happy hours (5-8pm).
