Ottoman opulence is still the order of the day at Kazan – in fact, this fabulous Turkish restaurant has lost none of its luxurious appeal since its refit: antique lamps and silk cushions may have given way to sleek contemporary looks, but the soft glow from teardrop-shaped lights and the privacy afforded by ornate screens still create a seductively romantic atmosphere. The kitchen shows its class with numerous hot and cold appetisers and specialities ranging from char-grilled lamb cutlets on a bed of smoked aubergine and garlic yoghurt to sea-bass parcels baked in parchment paper infused with raki and herbs, plus assorted desserts (think chocolate pyramids, baklava or apricots stuffed with clotted cream and walnuts). At lunchtime, there are ‘healthy’ mezze feasts to share – perfect with an ice-cold Efes beer, pomegranate mojito, or something Turkish from the wine list.
