Square Meal review of Kazan: ? Write your own review

Smart, atmospheric interiors & ‘great food at good prices’ have helped turn this modern Turkish restaurant into a neighbourhood favourite & one that extends its welcome to non-locals: ‘It feels like it is [my local] even if I haven’t been for months,’ says one fan. Cheerful staff will happily serve up plate after plate of moreish mezze if all you want are drinks & snacks, but it’s also worth exploring the excellent grill selection, which goes brilliantly with the salads. The downside is that the tables are very close together: this is ‘not the ideal place for deep & meaningful conversations’.

The food is gorgeous I went for the Tuna, which was cooked to perfection. Melt in the mouth. Even the bread is memorable. Staff very friendly and accommodating. Have been back a few times, and will a few more no doubt.

This place just keeps dragging me back through the doors, for more of the Sultan's Delight—very tender lamb on a bed of puréed aubergine. Everything seems to work here (apart from the draught you are subject to if you sit near the door!). The food is good, the service also. The wine list is good value and the atmosphere is spot on.
If I have a quibble it is that the starters don't quite measure up to the quality of the mains, so I often skip these. The mains can seem little pricey, but you don't mind when the food is so good.
All in all I recommend Kazan to anyone who is happy to spend about £50 on top class Turkish food for two (inc. wine) in a good atmosphere. Sure you can get great Turkish food for a third of this price on Green Lanes and in Hackney (I'm thinking of Anatolya on Hackney road). However, it is to Kazan's credit that despite the excellent quality of many of those cheap Turkish eateries we are so blessed with in London it is still worth paying for the Kazan experience from time to time.
