Square Meal Review of Jin Kichi ?

Don’t be deceived by Jin-Kichi’s higgledy-piggledy interior: the outmoded decor, tired furnishings & closely packed tables are no indication of food quality, which is pretty darned impressive. With chefs lined up behind a robata grill, it’s no surprise that skewers are a speciality. Yakitori, the typical chicken & spring onion combo, sets the benchmark, but there are much more unusual options, from ox tongue to chicken skin crisped with salt, or delicious quails’ eggs dappled with teriyaki sauce. Other hot stuff includes stewed pork belly & grilled salmon jaw, but don’t overlook the sushi; the raw fish is glisteningly fresh (try the rolls packed with silky yellowtail & avocado). As an alternative to the expensive & limited wine list, drink hot or cold saké, or shochu cocktails (grapefruit sour, for instance).

We have been regularly eating at this fantastic Japanese Yakitori eaterie for almost 10 years now and have never had a bad meal. In fact, all our meals have been superb with some dishes being excellent, in particular for us; the black cod, all tempura, sashimi, California & Hampstead rolls, pork belly and tonkatsu. My wife has lived in Japan and likened this to a traditional ‘neighbourhood’ restaurant, with the food being just as good!

The staff are very friendly anf efficeint, which they need to be because the didnig area is cramped, both upstairs and down. Try to get a seat at the robata grill to watch the chefs work their magic if you can. You will almost certainly need to book as it's busy every night of the week.
