Square Meal review of Vrisaki: ? Write your review

No longer a secret known only to north London’s extensive Greek-Cypriot community, Vrisaki is a long-standing & utterly charming taverna, cunningly concealed behind what looks like a kebab shop. Not much has changed after 26 years: colourful murals still line the walls & the unerringly good food keeps the place packed to the rafters. Servings are predictably generous, with all the usual mezze – grilled haloumi, fava beans, tzatziki, & lountza (smoked pork loin) – followed by great big portions of melt-in-the mouth lamb kleftiko or grilled kebabs. It’s hard, but do try to save room for the sweet trolley, laden with syrup oozing baklavas. Thanks to the new legislation, it’s now a much more pleasant place to be rather than the notoriously smoke-filled room of yore.

A terrible experience at Vrisaki. An astonishingly aloof greeting from the many Greek male staff on a quiet and fairly empty Thursday evening. As a group of four, we ordered a mezes for two and one main dish, but we were commanded to order a fourth dish by our incredibly dismissive waiter, who also refused to tell us what was included in the mezes. We were encouraged by the barman to take this minimum order policy up with the boss, as he had witnessed the way we were spoken to. To our horror, the owner had an equally disgusting attitude – to the point of aggression. We left in a state of shock and disbelief (I have never been treated so appallingly at any restaurant in my life). These rude and arrogant owners and their morose staff deserve no business at all.
