Located in the no-man’s land between Golders Green & West Hampstead, with a glowing neon sign outside, you wouldn’t expect Philpott’s Mezzaluna to serve up innovative Italian cuisine. But that’s exactly what it does with creative dishes such as pan-fried meatloaf with cranberry salsa, parmesan souffle & pistachio-crusted sea bass with spinach. These are interspersed with more traditional (& often more reliable) offerings such as spaghetti with meatballs & gremolata & rib-eye steak with mushrooms & Barolo sauce. Service is reliable & the bill about right.

This restaurant should certainly be included in the list of best Italian restaurants in London. The food is excellent and the service very friendly and efficient.. The set lunches are particularly good value with coffee and delicious petits four included in the price. Portions of meat or fish with their accompaniments are so generous that extra vegetables need not be ordered. The intermediate pasta course usually includes a choice of a really delicious pamesan souffle. At my last visit I enjoyed grilled asparagus with truffle and mushroom salsa, crispy duck with quince and parsnips, vanilla pannacotta with homemade gelato and fresh mint tea
