The tables in the high-ceilinged dining area of this evergreen Archway gastropub are a highly sought-after commodity. Its discerning north London congregation appreciates the serious, seasonal cooking based on wholehearted flavours from Britain, Spain & France. The blackboard menu changes daily, with typical highlights including wonderful octopus & chickpea stew with fragrant aioli, plaice with anchovy & caper butter served over crushed new potatoes, & glorious greengage ripple ice-cream for dessert. The wine list is as engaging as the cooking with plenty by the glass & although at busy times service can feel over-stretched, it never loses its good cheer. The bar area is just as busy, with customers juggling the satisfying snacks & cask-conditioned ales.

We go to St John's quite frequently, being locals… We always like our food and drinks and have been generally happy with the service until a recent visit: Recession, recession… we started adding up our restaurant bills – but even before checking our bill at our latest visit, we were surprised at the rather high final amount that already included 12,5% service charge… We were over charged by £11 for our meals, that consisted of a £5 starter and two main courses – not a difficult one to add up! After pointing it out to our waiter, although we felt rather awful, we did not get even an apology, yet alone a drink on the house… It was weird and uncomfortable – We won't be rushing back …

Another local. It has been a fixture in North London for many years and it still delivers. The menu always offers something interesting, the food is well cooked and presented. Sometimes the service comes with a little attitude, but overall a very good gastro pub with a great atmostphere.
