Square Meal review of St John's: ? Write your review

Following extensive restoration, St John’s has emerged reborn. Enter through etched-glass doors into the stately Victorian dining room of this immensely popular north London fixture. Tables & spacious booths are overlooked by a host of portraits, mostly the work of the landlord. Thankfully, the well-regarded menu remains largely unchanged, which means plenty of room for manoeuvre, with a choice spanning everything from Irish rock oysters to a pick & mix selection of French & British cheeses. In between, the tempting modern European repertoire might include white gazpacho (with ground almonds, bread & garlic), rabbit & pork terrine, or whole Isle of Wight lobster. Homemade pork scratchings work their humble magic in the bar out front, which also offers a good choice of Old World wines & three regularly changing real ales. Service sometimes comes ‘with a little attitude’.

Another local. It has been a fixture in North London for many years and it still delivers. The menu always offers something interesting, and the food is well cooked and presented. Sometimes the service comes with a little attitude, but overall a very good gastro pub with a great atmosphere.

We go to St John's quite frequently, being locals… We always like our food and drinks and have been generally happy with the service until a recent visit: Recession, recession… we started adding up our restaurant bills – but even before checking our bill at our latest visit, we were surprised at the rather high final amount that already included 12,5% service charge… We were over charged by £11 for our meals, that consisted of a £5 starter and two main courses – not a difficult one to add up! After pointing it out to our waiter, although we felt rather awful, we did not get even an apology, yet alone a drink on the house… It was weird and uncomfortable – We won't be rushing back …
