1880’s off the beaten track location may account for its scant patronage. Expense may be a contributing factor too. But this evening-only dining room at the Bentley Kempinski deserves a stronger following as the food is often judged ‘out of this world’, staff ‘utterly efficient’ & the surrounds of marble & gilt ‘fabulously opulent’. The main menu is made up of a tempting selection of grazing dishes, best approached by way of either the seven or eight-course tasting menu. Among the beautifully wrought creations you might find sauteed scallops with artichoke purée & a smidgen of grapefruit to cut through the sweetness, juicy beef fillet with a rich sauce of red wine, bone marrow & shallots, & divine creme brulée with a hint of aniseed. In spite of the preposterously grand surroundings, staff aren’t the least bit precious & although it can set you back a small fortune, fans consider it a price worth paying.
