Following its refit by Turner Prize-winning artist Martin Creed, Sketch's flamboyant Gallery has ditched the trippy futuristic funland look in favour of bold criss-cross patterns on the walls and zigzags on the floors; every piece of furniture, cutlery and glassware is deliberately different, and you may end up drinking out of some rather ‘unappealing receptacles'. Food-wise, Pierre Gagnaire's menu is also a hotchpotch of ‘tricksy' dishes that can leave diners scratching their heads: vegetable curry and Swiss-chard ravioli may sit uneasily with highly worked contrivances such as ‘Chantilly lace' (black rice, lobster bisque, red pepper and horseradish cream) or roast rump of Angus beef with cabbage and sesame paste, onion cream, ‘vadouvan' seasoning and enokitake mushrooms. Trendy staff are fully signed up to the concept, and any signs of dissent from the increasingly mature crowd of diners are often met with baffled looks.
