If you’re looking for a bargain on Lots Road, you’re more likely to find one at this tidy gastropub rather than at the auction house opposite. Refectory tables & stripped-wood interiors might be ten a penny these days, but it’s the attention to detail & attractively priced menu that puts this boozer a rung above some of its rivals. At the bar, big-name brews appear alongside more interesting draughts such as Cotswold Wheat Beer, & there are also some appealing wines by the glass – perfect if you fancy exploring the mainstream menu: a three-course blowout of chicken-liver pâté with gooseberry chutney, pork & leek sausages with mash, & chocolate brownie should leave change from £25, or you can opt for something more ‘cheffy’ such as slow-roast poussin with pea & mushroom broth.
