The giant sepia images of long-dead Italians add an agreeably period note to Osteria Appenino, though these days the waiters wear T-shirts rather than starched collars & there’s nothing remotely stuffy about this buzzy little restaurant. Pizza & pasta are the staples here & there are plenty of both to choose from, from a pizza bufala with cold diced cherry tomato, basil & buffalo mozzarella to crab ravioli cooked in fish stock & light tomato sauce. Meaty mains plump out the rest of the menu, while the short Italian wine list offers affordable glugging by the large or small glass. Window seats facing Devonshire Row are the best for people watching.
