Church crypts have always been pretty atmospheric places, so it’s no wonder that one of Brixton’s most buzzy bars is located beneath St Matthew’s Church. The former home of the vibey Bug Bar still heaves with twentysomethings grooving to live music on Thursdays & live DJs on Fridays & Saturdays. There’s even stand-up comedy acts on Wednesdays. The cocktail list encompasses exotic little numbers specially created for Babalou such as the Grace Kelly: an icily elegant blend of gin, grapes, elderflower & apple. Platters of samosas, satays & kebabs target large groups.
