With big-name takeaways & branded coffee chains all around, you might think you were in strict sarnie territory, but look at the back of the Nicolas wine merchant & there you have it: a dinky little French wine bar tucked away in a discreet corner of One Canada Square. Every wine from the shelves is available to ‘drink in’ (with a £1.50 corkage fee), although they also offer a neat list of 20 pours by the glass (all from Bordeaux, Burgundy & other French regions, as is the Nicolas way). The food is a good match, with its line-up of solid Gallic fare such as croque chèvre, confit duck or pork shank with ratatouille. Round things off with tarte au citron or a selection of runny French cheeses, & dream of Dordogne.
