Square Meal Review of Annie's ?

Sitting pretty, just a stroll from the Thames, Annie’s is the sort of place where romantically inclined women yearn to bring their beaus. It’s easy to see why: the rococo interior of this cosy, corner restaurant features flying cherubs on ornately framed mirrors, a profusion of flowers, flickering candles & abundant fairy lights. Love-struck couples aren’t the only constituency, however. Families swoop here at lunchtimes, drawn by a brunch menu that ranges from fruit & granola to full English breakfasts; others drop in for Sunday roasts & all-day, brasserie-style options such as mussels with bacon & cider or pork belly with apple & rosemary compote. Cocktails & fairly priced wines (nearly 20 by the glass) go well with easy bar snacks, while pavement tables & a spacious private dining room offer further possibilities.

Went along for lunch on Sunday last weekend. Annie's is a buzzing place with kids and families making up most of the diners. I thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere but would advise others to probably go in the evening if they are looking for something a bit more intimate or romantic. This is the second time I have eaten there and would recommend to others.

Our starters of salt and pepper prawns were OK. I prefer peeled prawns but that is personal preference. Tasty if unremarkable. I had roast lamb as a main whilst my girlfriend enjoyed roast chicken. We both raved about both dishes with particularly high marks going to the sweet potato puree that came with the chicken. One desert of lemon tart with toffee sauce and vanilla ice cream (from the specials) was the most disappointing thing we had. I told the chef to lose the sauce as it overpowered the lemon.

Other then the food, a good wine list and we both enjoyed a glass of prosecco to start.

All in all we both enjoyed and will be back.

Like the first article says, it is a real 'neighbourhood' place to eat, relax and surround yourself with a wonderful atmosphere. We live in Kew, so it’s a lovely walk over Kew Bridge to get there and takes a good 30 mins! But it works up the appetite and the warm welcome we always receive from the very friendly staff. It’s pretty small downstairs and can appear a bit squashed, but that’s all part of the charm. The food is great; simple, well cooked and well seasoned and the prices to match. Very good wine list, had a bottle of Cotes Du Rhone and it was served at the perfect temp (something where even the top enders get it wrong these days!!). This little gem right near the river is now a common fixture in our diary, whether it’s a quiet meal for 2 midweek, or a nice, relaxed evening out with friends. Go there and see for yourself.
