Cheery-looking & commercial (in a good way), Chowki is a great ‘walk in, quick bite to eat’ kind of place off Piccadilly Circus, filled with communal, canteen-style tables. The menu treks up & down the subcontinent, focusing on regions such as the Punjab, Gujarat & Chettinad, so a typical meal– served in a bone-china redesign of the stainless-steel thali tray – might be made up of northern keema mutter (spicy lamb mince with peas), Parsee vegetable stew or coconut-based south Indian fish curry, plus rice, dhal & bread on the side – all for £15. The grill section of the menu offers variants based on king prawns, marinated salmon, chicken & lamb, & there’s always plenty for vegetarians beyond the usual sides – think steamed dhokla cakes, bean khichadi & potatoes stuffed with paneer cheese.
