‘It may be expensive, but it’s worth it’, affirms a long-standing supporter of this ultra-luxurious bar, whose shelves of leather-bound books, dark-wood furniture & heirloom paintings whisk drinkers back to the aristocratic world of 18th-century drawing rooms & after-dinner brandies. The smoking jackets & pipes of that era may be long gone, but the deference of the smartly dressed staff, the tinkling grand piano, the plush furnishings & the high-calibre big spenders supping here all reference their surroundings well. The cocktail list is immense, but prefers top-notch versions of traditional mixes (sidecars, sours, and so on) to new-fangled Johnny-come-latelys, while true purists should be seduced by the wealth of high-rolling Champagnes & extensive library of world-beating Cognacs. The innermost sanctum is the most atmospheric of the three rooms that hug this bar.
