Square Meal review of Library Bar at The Lanesborough: ? Write your own review

The Library Bar refers to its collection of vintage Cognacs as ‘liquid history’ (there’s one dating back to 1770 – a snip at £4,000 for a snifter), but the term might just as well be applied to the vibe in this beautifully upholstered den. With its classic wingback chairs, Stubbs-like canvases, floor-to-ceiling bookcases & open fire in winter, you’d be forgiven for imagining that you’ve stepped into a beautifully appointed country house or, at the very least, an ultra-exclusive gentlemen’s club. In fact, the Lanesborough was once a hospital. In addition to the Cognacs, the bar stocks an exemplary array of top Bordeaux & single malts, as well as producing an elegantly restrained selection of cocktails. Bar snacks are fairly substantial. Service is as soft-footed as you might expect in a library, & the atmosphere, while hushed, offers a welcome break from the relentless chic of many nearby watering holes.

Very disappointed!

The Library Bar used to be a wonderful example of perfect service set in a room that brings to mind a Gentleman's club. A quintessentially British experience.

Sadly the charming Brits have been replaced by smarmy Italians, the worst of whom is managing the door. Not only do they seem to have a select seating policy – not previously the case (so expact to be seated in a lack-lustre annex if the bar is busy), but the previously crisp and courtious service has been replaced by a mediterranian indifference that whilst maintaining an efficiency, can just as easily be found in any club or bar on the high street.

I called the Lanesborough to book a table in the Library Bar a month early, but on arrival was met with a rude and irritable little man who physically blocked our way to the bar and insisted that it ‘was not possible’ that I had left a booking.

Not the place that I remember; go to the Connaught.
