Sketch's gilded Lecture Room & Library remains a grander-than-grand one-off – an opulent pleasure palace where anything goes and deep pockets are obligatory. It's an audaciously ostentatious show – from the sparkling gold-walled dining room to the bankrupting Champagne trolley – and Pierre Gagnaire's devilishly expensive food plays along with the fantasy: £42 pays for a whimsical extravaganza entitled ‘sea garden no.10' – a wacky multi-plate starter involving fat langoustines with shrimp butter and an intense bisque, oysters buried in sorrel and foaming boullion, and white crab meat dressed with avocado and citrus gel. There are also waves of complexity as the kitchen unleashes ibérico pork, cherries and black pudding embellished with Swiss-chard gratin, rum-flavoured mash and a salad of crunchy pig's ears, kimchi and radish – although a simply fabulous chocolate soufflé yields some sensory respite. Meanwhile, a ‘gourmet rapide' lunch promises financial relief, and the starry French-accented wine list is managed with flawless acumen.
A huge tome, this list has one star player: France. The wine list at Sketch is all about the classics, with Champagne a notable highlight. There’s also an extensive range of Bordeaux and Burgundy. Margins are on the high side, but credit must go to such an all-encompassing selection from these two stars of the Gallic wine world.

Although he says that his love of cooking took a while to develop, Pierre Gagnaire has matured into one of France's pre-eminent chefs, gaining three Michelin stars with both incarnations of his eponymous French restaurant. Born in 1950, he worked his way through various kitchens in France & the US before returning to cook at his father's restaurant, Le Clos Fleury near St Etienne, maintaining its Michelin star. At 30, he launched his own restaurant in St Etienne, gaining a second star in 1986 & a third in 1993. In 1996 he set up at the Hotel Balzac in Paris, regaining his three-star status within two years. He & restaurateur Mourad Mazouz launched the headline-grabbing Sketch in 2002. Are you the restaurant owner? Click here for Links & Logos

Samphire and Salsify :: Sketch : Lecture Room and Library
Sketch in Mayfair is a bit like Pat Sharp’s Fun House – it’s a vast building which houses a whole host of different bars and dining rooms. There’s The Gallery – a lively gastro brasserie, The Parlour – a dazzling tea room, The East Bar – a secret and intimate cocktail room, The Glade – a chilled and relaxed bar and a collection of pod toilets which is unlike anything I’ve ever seen before (see below). However, my visit on this particular occasion was for lunch at the two Michelin starred Lecture Room and Library and we were both really excited...

That Hungry Chef! :: Lecture room at Sketch
My first memory of Sketch was when it had newly opened and I ended up doing a brief stint in the Gallery kitchen. I had no clue who Pierre Gangaire was, but that he was some big shot French chef who had teamed up with Mourad Mazouz of Momo to open an uber-luxe, decadent space in the West End where the restaurant was an enormous art gallery, the waitresses very beautiful, the kitchen brand new, the toilets worth a trip just on their own and the prices exorbitant. Almost a decade later, Michelin’s usual palaver of leaked results stated that the upstairs restaurant, Lecture Room & Library had just won their second star, having dined there just a week before...

FoodiesOnTheProwl FoodiesOnTheProwl :: Sketch Lecture Room and Library, Oct 2012
Sketch Lecture Room and Library is the London establishment of Michelin starred chef Pierre Gagnaire. I’ve been meaning to give Sketch a try, but for some reason or another I never got around to doing so until now. On a day to day basis the kitchen is headed by Jean-Denis Le Bras and he seems to...>

No Expert ...but I know what I like - Food Blog, Restaurant reviews :: Sketch – in a world of its own
A visit to Sketch is certainly an interesting and rather OTT experience. I felt rather like a kid with a golden ticket to Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory. As you enter the building you have the Parlour on your right, where you can order an indulgent Breakfast, Afternoon Tea, Comfort food and Cocktails. The rather low key Parlour is in stark contrast to Pierre Gagnaire’s Michelin stared restaurant in the Lecture Room. The name of the restaurant does not really conjure up what is revealed after you are escorted up the exotically lit staircase. The doors are dramatically thrown open and you find yourself in a jewel box like room, decorated with a red, orange, blue and gold palette...
