Not as painfully hip as some of Hoxton’s eateries, Cru’s warehouse-sized dining area & open kitchen appeal on several levels. There’s a traditional a la carte but sharing platters are the mainstay of the menu, loaded with Mediterranean flavours such as lovely oily focaccia, falafel & aioli, asparagus frittata or stuffed vine leaves. Weekend brunches are also a speciality, offering a very respectable fry-up (including black pudding & bubble & squeak) alongside eggs Benedict & kippers with roasted potatoes. As Cru’s name suggests it’s also serious about wine, though far from stuffy, & staff are happy to suggest good matches – such as a 2005 San Joanne vinho verde with battered cod & chips – from a lively & reasonably priced list. The jazzy soundtrack adds to the vibrant atmosphere.
